Guy at the retro game shop told me to use thermal paste on my Switch OLED heat pipe mod instead of a pad
He said a pad would leave a gap and sure enough my temps dropped 8 degrees after switching to paste, has anyone else found pads just don't cut it for thin gaps?

Pads are just too thick for tight spots like that, I had the same issue on a PS4 Pro where paste dropped my temps way more than the pad ever did. Made me switch to paste for anything thin and never looked back.

And honestly, I think thermal pads can actually make things worse in tight spots because they trap heat if they don't make perfect contact. Paste flows into every little gap so it's way more forgiving for those thin spaces. Feels like pads are only good for situations where you need that gap filled without worrying about it moving around later.
