Guy at a Toledo retro shop told me recapping my own Game Gear was a waste, and I still think he was dead wrong
I was browsing a stall at a game swap in Toledo back in March and mentioned I had just re-capped my Game Gear with a kit I bought online for $14. The guy behind the table, probably in his 50s, laughed and told me I was wasting my time because "those old caps are fine, the real problem is the screen." I told him the screen was already swapped to an IPS panel and the sound was still cutting out, which is a classic bad cap symptom, and he just shrugged and went back to his phone. Here is the thing though, he was half right about one part, since the power board caps on these units fail way more than people talk about and my kit did not even include those. I ended up ordering a second set for the power board for another $9 and it fixed the last of the buzzing. So was I dumb for doing the work myself, or is this guy just mad that nobody pays shops $80 for a job that takes an hour with a $23 kit? Curious if anyone else has run into the "just buy a new one" crowd at swap meets.
Did the shop guy ever explain why he thought a $23 kit and an hour of your time was a bad trade? Sounds more like he was protecting his bench rate than giving you real advice.
