Pro tip: A clip-on light changed my late-night work sessions in hostels.
It makes working in hostel common areas way more comfortable after dark.

That bit about late-night work sessions in hostels is so true. My friend Sarah was finishing her thesis in a Berlin hostel last year, and the main room had one dim overhead bulb. She clipped a small LED light to her laptop screen, and suddenly she could see her notes without straining. It created this little pool of light just for her, while others were watching a movie nearby. She said it felt like having her own quiet office corner in the middle of the chaos.

That "little pool of light" thing @the_tyler is such a perfect way to put it. It's wild how just one small light can carve out your own space like that.

Honestly that setup sounds like a good way to annoy everyone else in the common room. A bright light in a dark space is super distracting for people trying to relax or watch a movie. It's pretty selfish to carve out your own pool of light when it invades other people's shared area. Hostels are about compromise, not turning a public spot into your private office. Would you want someone shining a lamp in your eyes while you're trying to unwind?
