The folder naming system that finally made me stop losing files

I used to just dump everything onto my desktop and hope for the best. My screen was a mess of random PDFs and screenshots from months ago. Last month I tried something super simple - I made 3 main folders labeled "Work", "Personal", and "Archive". Inside each one I put folders for each month like "March 2025" or "April 2025". It took maybe 20 minutes to set up but now I can find any file in under a minute. The trick is I have to actually file things right when I download them instead of letting them pile up. Has anyone else tried a date based system or do you use something totally different?

My buddy tried this exact system but forgot to actually file stuff for three weeks and ended up with a folder called "April 2025" that had 147 unorganized screenshots in it.

Date based systems work for a lot of stuff but it's only half the battle. The real win is actually putting things where they go right away. That's the hard part. Most people I know have a decent system but they just let the pile grow until they can't find anything anyway. Kind of like how everyone has a junk drawer that starts "temporary" but becomes permanent after a week.
