PSA: My inbox hit 2,847 unread emails because of one stupid setting

I was sitting at my desk in Chicago last Thursday trying to find an invoice from March and gave up after 20 minutes. Turned out my email app had been archiving newsletters instead of deleting them for like 3 years. I spent 2 hours just mass-unsubscribing and deleting old stuff. Has anyone else had a hidden setting mess up their whole inbox like that?
