Just learned my phone pings the cell tower every 5 minutes even when I'm not using it

Jumping off what coleman.seth said about the battery drain, that's exactly right. I'd also add that if you live in a hilly area or near a lot of tall buildings, your phone might be pinging more often trying to find a good tower. Sometimes even just moving your phone to a different spot in the house can help calm it down a bit. A friend of mine used to keep her phone on a metal filing cabinet at work and the battery would die by lunch, all because the signal kept getting blocked.

Start checking your battery usage stats right now, that's probably what's draining your phone faster than you think. The 5 minute pings are totally normal for cell tower handoffs, but it might mean your phone's having a hard time locking onto a strong signal, so it's working harder than it should. I'd recommend toggling airplane mode on and off to force a fresh connection (or just reboot the phone entirely, that fixes a lot of weird network behavior). Also look in your settings for "mobile data always active" or "keep mobile data on during sleep" and make sure that's off if you don't need it. Stuff like this is usually nothing to worry about, but at least you know why your battery's taking a hit.
