Airport layover made me rethink my whole notification setup

Got stuck in the Denver airport for 7 hours last month after a delayed flight. I kept glancing at my phone every few minutes, but nothing was actually important, just app pings and forum replies. It hit me that I was treating every buzz like an emergency when I couldn't even leave the gate. Now I'm split between keeping notifications on for work emails and muting everything else. Does anyone else set strict notification rules based on location, or do you just turn everything off when you travel?

Hang on, before you lock in that location-based thing... is the problem really the notifications, or is it that you're still checking the phone even when it's quiet? I've tried the whole "mute everything except work" trick and it just made me tighter, not better. If a work email comes through at 2am your time, are you actually going to sleep? That's what I'm wrestling with, the line between "urgent" and "can wait until morning" gets so blurry when you're sitting in a terminal. What's the real cutoff you're drawing for yourself, and how do you stop your own brain from filling in the silence?
