Took my pet portrait to a local gallery show and got roasted so bad I redrew it in 3 days

Last Saturday I entered this little juried show over in Hillcrest, mostly to get my name out. I did this oil painting of a friend's corgi, super painterly, loose brushwork, the whole thing. The judge walked past it TWICE and then said out loud, "composition feels nervous, like the dog's about to bolt." In front of like 6 other artists. I stood there holding my styrofoam cup of cheap wine and just nodded. But they were RIGHT. The eyes were too small and the background had this weird diagonal that fought the subject. So I went home, pulled up the reference photo, cropped the canvas to square, tightened the background to a flat warm gray, and repainted the eyes three times. Resubmitted it to a smaller contest two days ago and actually placed second. Now I keep a printed checklist on my studio wall: eyes first, then background values, then ANY expression work. Has anyone else had a judge or customer give feedback that stung but secretly made your work way better?
