Serious question, did I waste 3 weekends fixing banding on my skin tones?
I spent about 14 hours over three weekends repainting a digital portrait in Procreate because harsh color banding kept showing up in the shadows of her neck and I had no clue why it was happening. Turns out my canvas was set to 8-bit color the whole time, and it took a guy on a Discord server in Toronto like 20 seconds to spot it in my screenshot. So now I need to know, how many of you are still working in 8-bit canvases without even knowing it?
Yeah that 8-bit default has burned tons of people, not just you. Banding in shadows is the dead giveaway, and most folks never check that setting until something looks ugly. Switching to 8-bit is honestly a trap for digital painting since smooth skin tones need way more color steps. Feel for you on the lost weekends, but at least now you know what to look for before you start.
