My niece said my old Wacom sketches look more alive than my new ones, and I can't stop thinking about it
My niece is 19 and does digital art on her iPad, and she was looking through my old folder from around 2016 over the weekend. She pointed at a rough sketch I made on a Wacom Bamboo and said it had more life in it than the clean stuff I post now. I laughed it off at first, but then I actually scrolled through both folders side by side for like an hour. Back then I had maybe 40 layers max and I was just pushing shapes around, no fancy brushes or clipping masks. Now I use like 200 layers and everything comes out stiff and over-worked, honestly. I think I traded speed and mess for polish somewhere along the way. Has this happened to anyone else, where your older, rougher pieces just hit different than the new ones?
Did you ever watch someone good at something just stop caring about the right things? Buddy of mine did tattoos for years and his old flash sheets from his first shop were nasty little things, shaky lines, bad shading, but people fought over them. He got a fancy setup later and started cleaning everything up, and his bookings actually dropped. He couldn't figure it out until a customer told him the old ones looked like a person drew them and the new ones looked like a machine did. He ended up going back to doing his first pass by hand and barely touching it after, and that's when the work got good again. Sometimes the mess is the point, and the polish is just hiding where you were actually thinking.
