Lost 3 weeks of canvas work in Portland because I ignored the auto save warning
Last Monday I was finishing a 4000x4000 piece for a client in Portland and Procreate froze mid brush stroke. I had turned off auto save back in March because it kept interrupting my flow, and the app crashed before I saved manually. Lost the whole layered file and had to rebuild from a flat JPG export. Does anyone here run a backup script or cloud sync that actually keeps up while you paint?
I used to turn off auto save too because I hated losing my place in the middle of a stroke, and I figured manual saving was enough. Then I lost a whole night of shading on a piece and spent six hours rebuilding it, and that was the day I changed my mind about all of it. Now I just let auto save do its thing and I barely notice it anymore, the little pauses are way less annoying than starting over. For backup I keep a folder synced to Dropbox and export a layered PSD at the end of every session, so even if Procreate dies I still have something to work from. Losing a flat JPG is the worst because you can't fix anything on it, so having that layered copy somewhere is worth the extra minute it takes.
