My buddy got one as a gag gift and now he won't shut up about it. Claims it's the best thing for his budget sketches.

Sounds like your buddy found a hidden gem. Happened to me with a cheap sketchbook from a dollar store once. Felt silly buying it but the paper was weirdly perfect for pencil work. Now I'm that guy telling everyone to check the discount bin. The best tools are sometimes the ones you find by accident.
