Hit 500 followers on my art page and it felt way bigger than I expected

I started posting my digital paintings on Instagram back in March. I do mostly fantasy landscapes with bright colors. This week I hit 500 followers and I honestly didn't think it would matter that much. But seeing that number pop up made me feel like people actually like my stuff. It's not huge compared to some artists, but for me it means I'm doing something right. Has anyone else felt a weird surprise from a milestone like that?

I actually just read something about how getting to your first 500 followers is like the hardest part for artists because that's when you start building real community instead of just random likes. I've noticed that with my own stuff too, the numbers feel different when you know those are people who actually bothered to stick around. I passed 200 on my little nature sketch page last month and it caught me off guard how much it mattered. Why does it feel more real than the bigger jumps later? 500 isn't just a number, it's like proof that your style is clicking with someone.

Consider that the earlier followers are the ones who found you before the algorithm's push, so you know they came from genuine discovery rather than just being shown your work. Your first 500 likely clicked on something raw where your style was still finding its feet, which makes their choice to stay feel more like a personal decision than a passive follow. That's why the milestone hits different - it's the difference between someone happening by and someone deliberately stopping to sit with your work.
