Had coffee with my cousin who's a gallery curator, and she said my digital pieces looked 'too clean'... like they were made to be safe.

Disagree with the idea that messy equals good. Clean work can be just as strong, it just uses a different kind of tension. Your cousin might be stuck in a scene that only values one kind of "real." Maybe the cleanness is your point, like a sharp, quiet room after a loud argument.

My friend Jake had a show last year. The gallery owner told him his sculptures were "too polite." Jake spent a month just beating up the clay with his hands, leaving fingerprints and cracks everywhere. The next pieces sold out.
