A comment on my inktober piece made me rethink my whole process

Last week I posted a piece I'd spent about 6 hours on, some moody alley scene with wet cobblestones that I was pretty happy with. Someone commented 'great textures, but the light source is kind of all over the place' and at first I got defensive. Then I zoomed in and they were RIGHT, the window glow was coming from one side but the shadow direction suggested another, I just hadn't noticed because I was so focused on the details. It made me realize I've been skipping the value sketch stage for months because I wanted to get straight to the fun stuff. Now I'm forcing myself to do a 15 minute grayscale thumbnail for everything, and honestly it's fixing problems before they start. Has anyone else had a comment that stung at first but turned out to be the most useful feedback you got all year?
