Vent: 6 years of torquing head bolts and never knew the lube rule
I always torqued head bolts dry on rebuilds because that's how my first mentor showed me, and last month a Cummins guy in Fresno watched me do one and asked if I wanted a comeback. He had me check the spec sheet and it said 'oil lubricated' right there in the notes, I'd been reading that page for half a decade. Any of you guys run into a basic step you somehow missed for years, and what tipped you off?

Man, my buddy went through almost the same thing with valve lash. He set them cold for like four years on every small block he touched because that's what the old guy at his first shop taught him, and nobody ever corrected him. Then a guy he was helping at a track day asked why his motor sounded like a sewing machine, pulled the spec card, and sure enough it said to set them hot. He said he stood there holding that card feeling like a total idiot. The lash was off enough that he'd been leaving power on the table the whole time. Stuff like that hides in plain sight when you learn it by watching instead of reading.
