The cheap filter wrench that beat my $120 tool

Last month in Phoenix I was fighting a stuck oil filter on a Cummins and my fancy ratcheting wrench kept slipping. Out of frustration I grabbed a $9 strap wrench from the auto parts store down the road. It gripped the filter perfectly and had it off in under two minutes. Has anyone else found that the simple tools sometimes outperform the expensive ones?
