That master tech swore by ether, cost me an hour in Boise

Old timer I worked with in Boise said to spray ether into the intake on a cold Dmax even when it cranks fine, so I did it last week and it backfired hard, melted the glow plug harness. Took me an hour to fix what he claimed was a "simple trick" and now I don't trust his advice on anything. Anyone else had a supposed expert lead them into a stupid repair?

That "simple trick" bit is the giveaway he never actually did it himself, just heard it from someone else. Ether on a modern diesel is playing with fire, one bad glow plug and you're melting stuff or worse.
