Spent $600 on a Snap-on scanner and it barely works for my older trucks

I bought a Snap-on Ethos Edge last year to diagnose a 2001 Cummins ISB and it couldn't even read half the parameters I needed. The thing froze up three times before I gave up and borrowed a buddy's old Matco scanner. Anyone else dropped serious cash on a high end tool that just didn't deliver for your vintage diesels?

My buddy bought that same scanner and it crashed on his old Ford 7.3 after five minutes.

and honestly that tracks with my luck too. I got one of those a couple years ago and it worked great on my neighbor's gasser but the second I plugged it into my old 6.0 it just gave me a bunch of error codes I couldn't even read. maybe it's just me but I swear old diesel trucks hate anything with a screen. I'm pretty sure my '94 7.3 would rather I just read the smoke signals coming out of the exhaust.
