Serious question, turbo let go on a 6.7 Cummins at 3am and my phone flashlight was useless
Had a wastegate actuator stick on a customer's 2019 Ram 2500 out near Weatherford last Tuesday, and the guy called me at 3am because he heard a pop and lost all boost. I rolled out there with my 3/8 ratchet set and a spare v-band clamp, but the real problem was the oil feed line had a pinhole leak spraying right onto the hot side of the turbo. Spent about 90 minutes in a Walmart parking lot with a headlamp zip tied to my cap because my phone died at 4:15. Got it limped home on a clamped hose and a prayer, but I'm wondering if anyone here carries a spare oil feed line in their truck kit or just tells the customer to tow it.
The pinhole oil feed leak is the real killer here, not the actuator. Most guys focus on the turbo itself but a pinhole spraying oil on the hot side is a fire waiting to happen. Carrying a spare feed line on a 6.7 is kinda pointless though since the fittings and routing differ by year, but having a cheap headlamp and some fuel line to slip over a leak will get you off the shoulder way faster than your phone. Tow bill on a diesel at 3am runs $400 minimum anyway, so the prep is worth way more than the part.
