Old timer at the shop set me straight on injector timing

Had a guy tell me I was wasting time with the dial indicator method on a 5.9 Cummins. He showed me the line bore trick with a straight edge and feeler gauges and I cut my timing job from 3 hours to 45 minutes. Anybody else run into shortcuts that actually work better than book specs?

Hold up, line bore trick on the injection pump without the dial indicator? That's one of those things where I'd have to see it to believe it, but if it shaved that much time off, I'm definitely curious. Your mileage may vary, but an old timer's shortcut is usually worth listening to.

Did you have to pull the injection pump off for that or was it still on the block?

Peel that pump off in about 10 minutes and do the line bore trick right on the bench... way easier than fighting with the dial indicator under the hood.
