My neighbor's diesel generator story made me rethink used oil disposal.
I was helping my neighbor with his backup diesel generator last week. He had been dumping the old oil in a ditch behind his property. It hit me how common that might be in rural areas. In my shop, we always collect used oil for recycling, but I never thought about the guys at home. Now, I make a point to tell customers about proper oil disposal sites. It's a small thing, but if every mechanic spreads the word, we can cut down on a lot of pollution. Seeing that black sludge in the soil was a real wake-up call.

Yeah, most auto parts stores will take your used oil for free. They've got those big collection bins out back. Surprised more folks don't know about that, you ever used one?

Wait, you're telling me they take it for free? I've been dragging my old oil to the dump and paying a fee like a chump lol. That's crazy that they just have bins out back. How have I never noticed those? Seriously, I need to tell everyone about this. My dad's been doing it wrong for years too.
