Blew a turbo on a 2020 Freightliner Cascadia Tuesday afternoon...

Was hauling a load of gravel down I-35 near Denton when I heard that whistling sound change. Pulled over and found the wastegate actuator arm had snapped clean off. Has anyone else run into this on the newer Detroit DD15s?

Were you sure it was the wastegate arm and not just a boost hose?

Yeah but check this - if the arm was loose enough to rattle, you'd hear it at idle way before boost ever built up. Nobody ever talks about the wastegate solenoid letting go instead of the arm itself.

Wait, wouldn't a boost hose leak usually cause a more obvious hiss or surging issue instead of that specific rattle you heard at certain RPMs? I spent a whole weekend chasing down a similar noise on mine and swapped every single hose before realizing the arm itself had almost no tension left. Boost hose problems tend to mess with your AFRs too, while a loose wastegate arm is just pure mechanical clatter and nothing else.
