A customer's throwaway comment flipped how I pack bearings

Last Tuesday a trucker watched me hammer a bearing in and said 'you gonna heat that cup or force it like a caveman?' I laughed it off but then tried his way, warming the race with a torch to about 200 degrees. It slid in smooth with zero pressure, no risk of gouging the bore. Now I keep a cheap temp gun in my box and do it that way every time. Any of you guys heat races or still press them cold?

Heard a machinist swear by that trick years ago, never tried it though. Sounds smart.
