Went to the Detroit Economic Club mixer last week and noticed something odd

I was at the Detroit Economic Club mixer on Tuesday. Everyone was just standing around their own tables, not mixing at all. Does anyone have a good trick for getting people to actually talk to each other at these things?

Used to think name tags were pointless but now I swear by them. Wrote "ask me about my favorite local coffee spot" on mine and people actually came up to talk. Also started placing a small bowl of mints on the table with a sign that says "grab one and introduce yourself to someone new." Simple stuff like that breaks the ice way better than any fancy networking trick. What kind of crowd was there?

yeah @riley_price that mints thing is genius. i did something similar at a meetup once with a jar of candy and a little sign that said "take one and tell someone your favorite dessert" and it got people talking way more than the actual networking prompts did.
