Vent: bad timing on my first big networking event in Corktown
So I finally paid the 40 bucks to go to this small business mixer in Corktown three Thursdays back, and it could not have gone worse. I had printed 50 cards the day before, and the printer jammed, so I showed up with 12 cards that had smeared ink on the bottom third. Then the venue double booked, so a wedding shower was happening in the same room, and nobody could hear anybody talk. I still tried to work the room, got three real conversations going, but two of the people turned out to be reps for a payroll company, not owners like I thought. I left after an hour feeling like I wasted the night. The weird part is the one guy I did click with runs a print shop on Michigan Ave, and he texted me a week later about sending him some work. So was it a bad night or a good one? If you have a mixer story like this, did the follow up save it or was it dead on arrival?
