Tried speed networking at a Metro Detroit chamber event and got way more leads than I expected

I went to a Southfield chamber mixer last Tuesday thinking it would be the usual awkward name tag shuffle. They had this speed networking thing where you get 5 minutes per person before a bell rings. I figured I'd just hand out cards and smile. But after the third round I actually had a real conversation with a guy who runs a print shop in Warren. He told me his biggest headache is finding reliable referrals for commercial cleaning. I manage a few buildings in the area so I gave him a name on the spot. By the time I left I had three solid leads and two follow up meetings set for this week. Has anyone else tried these structured events or do you prefer the free form happy hour style?

Honestly the "5 minutes per person before a bell rings" part is what makes it work for me. I've been to those free form happy hour things where you're stuck with one person for 20 minutes making small talk about the weather. That print shop guy you met sounds like a perfect example of why speed networking clicks. You get just enough time to figure out if there's a real connection without wasting half the night on someone who can't help you. Structured all the way.
