Talked to a guy at the Eastern Market mixer who said something about follow up that hit me hard
Ran into this older contractor named Dave at the Eastern Market networking breakfast last Tuesday. Not a big talker, just kind of standing by the coffee. I was complaining about how I keep meeting people but nothing ever comes of it. He just looked at me and said "You're probably trying to close on the first hello." That sat with me all day. He said he never asks for a card or tries to sell anything at the first meeting. Just makes a note about something personal they mentioned and reaches out a week later with like a relevant article or a simple thought. I always thought follow up meant sending my rate sheet. Anyone else find that just building a tiny connection first works way better?

Dave was right. A quick text with a meme or article beats a rate sheet every time.

Two years ago at a hardware store I overheard a guy named Phil telling @evan295 the exact same thing about cat videos working better than business cards. Phil runs a roofing company and said he landed a six-figure job just by sending a customer a link to that video where the cat knocks over the Christmas tree. I still send rate sheets sometimes but I'm starting to think Phil and Dave are onto something.
