Pro tip: the handshake at the Detroit chamber mixer taught me a lesson

I was at the Detroit Regional Chamber mixer last Tuesday and this older guy in a cheap suit gave me the limpest handshake I've ever felt... he just let his hand hang there like a dead fish. He said "firm handshakes are for sales guys, not for real connections" and then he landed a deal right in front of me. Has anyone else noticed how big of a deal small gestures are in Detroit networking events?

That dead fish handshake thing really gets under my skin too. It's wild how something that small can totally change how you feel about a conversation.

Used to think handshakes were no big deal, but watching how people react to a limp one changed my mind. A weak handshake makes you look like you don't care or you're nervous, even if that's not the case. Now I make sure my grip is solid from the start, keeps things simple.
