Overheard a guy at Eastern Market say he only goes to networking events to find new plumbers
Makes me wonder if half the people shaking hands at those mixer things are just hunting for one specific contact and fake listening to everything else, anyone else notice this at Detroit events?

I used to think those networking events were just a waste of time honestly, everyone pretending to care about your business while scanning the room for someone better to talk to. But that plumber thing actually made me reconsider, like maybe half the people there are just as fake as I assumed but for a totally different reason. I remember this one guy at a Chamber event who kept nodding at me while I was talking about my work, then he just walked away mid-sentence to grab a plumber by the arm. Made me realize a lot of folks are probably running their own little shopping list in their head while you're talking, not even really listening just waiting for their turn to ask about what they need.

...and honestly that's like half the reason I stopped going to those things. I had a guy at a startup meetup literally look me dead in the eye while I was telling him about my work and then just turn around and walk off to grab some electrician. Didn't even say "be right back" or nothing. It's just a whole room full of people doing the same thing, circling each other like vultures with a checklist. Ngl I'd respect them more if they just handed out business cards and said "call me if you need a roofer" instead of pretending to care about my life story.
