Just tried handing out 50 coffee cards at a Chamber mixer in Troy and only 3 people called back
I figured skipping the usual pitch and just giving out $5 coffee cards with my number on them would get more replies than trading business cards, but 3 calls out of 50 feels rough. Is it worth burning $250 again at the next mixer, or do people in this city just want the plain handshake and card swap? Curious what actually worked for anyone here.
Three calls out of 50 hits different when you realize the coffee card itself might be the problem, not the number of people. Think about what a $5 card says to someone at a Chamber mixer. It says this person is trying to buy my attention, and now I owe them a call. That tiny guilt trip is enough to make people toss it in the glove box and forget it. What I've seen work better is giving out something tied to a shared thing, like a card for a local spot you both already go to, so the call back feels like swapping info instead of paying back a favor. Also, timing matters more than the gift. If you hand it over right when someone's mid conversation with someone else, it just becomes clutter. Wait till the room thins out and you get a real minute with them.
