I finally gave the Eastern Market after-hours mixer a shot last Tuesday
Walked out with two solid leads for freelance design work because I skipped the elevator pitch and just asked people what they were stuck on. Anyone else find the less formal events actually work better here?

The real trick is not getting stuck talking to the guy who's been "stuck" on choosing a font for his startup's napkins for three years. Two leads is a solid haul for a Tuesday night.

That napkin font guy is a known energy drain at these things. I've seen him debate serif versus sans serif while his drink gets warm. Getting two real leads out of that crowd, like you did @wright.taylor, is winning. It means you avoided the time traps and actually talked to people who might do business. Most nights you're lucky to get one solid contact, so two is a great result.

Honestly that whole scene reminds me of a guy at a trade show last fall who spent forty minutes explaining his "revolutionary" paper clip design. The whole time I'm just nodding, thinking about the sandwich I was gonna get after. Sometimes you gotta spot the time sinks early and make a polite exit. Did you at least get some decent snacks at the event?
