Hit 200 business cards in a single networking event - is that a win or a waste?

I went to that Detroit Chamber mixer last Thursday and ended up with 201 cards after three hours. Some people say collecting that many means you're just grabbing without real connections. But two of those turned into actual client meetings this week. Does the number of cards matter or should I aim for five deep chats next time instead?

Five deep chats would be way more useful than a pile of cards nobody remembers. Serious connections happen when you actually talk to people, not when you're speed-collecting like it's a contest. Quality over quantity is the real networking win every time because those five conversations will actually trust you enough to send referrals later. One good chat could bring more business than 200 cards sitting in a drawer or getting recycled.

My buddy Mike went to a Cleveland tech meetup last year and came back with 178 cards and told everyone he'd crushed it. He spent the next week sending generic follow-ups and got maybe two replies that went nowhere. Meanwhile I saw @sarah229 nailed it upstairs - Mike's coworker Lisa had five real talks that night, and one of those guys ended up referring her to a $15k contract three months later. Those cards in Mike's desk drawer just collected dust until he tossed them.
