Heard someone say networking is a 'waste of time' at a coffee shop on Grand River
I was grabbing a latte at this spot near Grand River and I overheard this guy telling his friend that Detroit networking events are just 'ego stroking sessions.' It made me think about my own experiences, you know? I've been going to the Motor City Connect meetups for about 8 months now, and yeah, some events are duds. But I landed a referral for a web design contract worth $2,000 just from chatting with a woman at a random Thursday mixer. So I guess my takeaway is that you have to be picky about which groups you invest time in. Has anyone else found a specific Detroit networking group that actually delivers real leads?

Ever actually followed up with someone from Motor City Connect outside the events to see if the leads kept coming? Curious if that $2,000 contract turned into a longer relationship or was just a one-off. Seems like the real value might be in who sticks around after the mixer ends.

Is it bad that I can't even remember if I followed up on half the people I met at those things? My memory is like a sieve that only holds onto the really awkward conversations.

Is anyone really taking that guy's opinion as gospel? He sounds like he burned out after one bad meetup and decided to make it everyone else's problem. I mean, some events are definitely a waste but acting like they're all ego stroking sessions is a pretty lazy take.
