Burned $120 on a speed networking event that was a total flop
Signed up for one of those downtown Detroit speed networking things at a bar near Campus Martius last month. Thought it'd be a solid way to meet some real decision makers, maybe pick up a few corporate clients for my training studio. Instead it was 40 people crammed into a back room, mostly other fitness folks and a couple of insurance agents trying to sell me policies. We got 3 minutes per person, which is barely enough time to say your name and shake a hand, let alone talk about what you actually do. By the end of the night I had maybe 10 business cards, half were from people who don't even work in this city, and zero follow-up meetings came out of it. The $120 covered a sad nacho platter and one drink ticket that I didn't even use. Has anyone else tried these paid mixer things in the area and actually gotten something from them, or am I better off just sticking to the free chamber of commerce events?
