Blew $400 on a fancy networking app membership before I ever met anyone in person

Signed up for that Detroit Connect pro tier back in February. Paid $400 for the year thinking it would hook me up with local business owners automatically. Spent 3 hours setting up my profile and messaging people. Got maybe 2 replies total and both were guys trying to sell me insurance. Should have just went to a Chamber of Commerce meetup for free instead. Anybody else get burned by one of those paid networking platforms?

Flip that around though, $400 is nothing compared to the time you'd waste at random chamber mixers shaking hands with people who don't even remember you the next day. The real value in those paid apps is the curated filters, lets you skip straight past the tire kickers and insurance bros to find actual decision makers. You just gotta treat it like a tool not a magic wand, send 50 messages a day and follow up like clockwork or yeah you'll get burned.

Good point @emery879 but 50 messages a day seems high unless you're in a really big market.
