A guy at a Ferndale coffee meetup told me to stop handing out cards at events
I used to walk into every Detroit networking mixer with a stack of 100 business cards and hand them to anyone I talked to for more than a minute. At a meetup in Ferndale last month, a guy who runs a print shop pulled me aside and said the cards were making me look desperate, so now I just ask people what they're working on and follow up on LinkedIn the next day. Has anyone else gotten blunt feedback at a networking event that actually helped?
A guy named Dave at a Royal Oak mixer told me the same thing back in 2019, so I switched to just asking people one good question and sending a LinkedIn note the next day. My follow up rate went way up once I stopped pushing paper at everyone.
