That $89 "energy audit" guy seemed like a scam until he found the gap behind my oven
Ok so a company out of Lakewood kept mailing me flyers about a cheap home energy audit. I figured it was a bait and switch to sell me a $6,000 furnace, so I ignored it for months. My wife finally called and I sat there ready to say no to everything.
The guy shows up with a thermal camera and a blower door thing that sucked air out of the whole house. Within 20 minutes he's pointing at a cold blue streak on the wall behind my kitchen oven and another one under the stairs. Turns out my 1958 ranch had almost no insulation in one whole exterior wall. He didn't try to sell me a furnace at all, just gave me a list and left.
I stuffed the oven gap with a $9 tube of caulk and my upstairs bedroom quit being an icebox. Heating bill dropped about $40 the first month. Still kind of annoying that the flyer was right. Anyone here had a blower door test done and was it worth more than the caulk-and-prayer method?
