Put a $20 smart thermostat on my 1920s bungalow and the boiler started short cycling
I swapped out the old dial thermostat in my Baker house for a cheap programmable one in January, thinking I'd finally stop paying to heat an empty living room. The first week it ran fine, then the boiler started kicking on and off every few minutes and my gas bill went up $30 instead of down. Turns out the old radiators hold heat for a long time, so short little heat calls just waste fuel and never let the rooms warm up steady. I set the swing to 3 degrees and it stopped the cycling, but the boiler guy I called said old cast iron wants long, slow burns, not quick hits. Anyone here running a newer thermostat on an old boiler, and what swing setting did you land on?
