Hot take: I ignored the ice dam on my Denver roof for 2 winters and paid for it last week
Back in January 2022 I noticed a small ice dam building up on the north side of my roof in Park Hill, and I figured it would just melt off on its own. It didn't, and every cold snap after that pushed more water under the shingles. Last week I finally had a guy come out, and he showed me soft spots in the decking plus a water stain spreading across my upstairs ceiling, which is going to run me about $2,400 to fix. The whole thing started with a $60 heat cable I kept putting off buying at the hardware store on Colfax. Has anyone here dealt with ice dams before, and did heat cables actually solve it or did you have to redo insulation too?
My husband calls me the queen of "I'll deal with that later" so trust me, I feel your pain on the $60 thing turning into $2,400. We put heat cables on our garage roof a few years back and they helped a lot, but the guy also told us our attic insulation was basically a joke, so we ended up doing both. Take this with a grain of salt since every roof is different, but I'd ask about the insulation while you've got someone out there anyway.
