Talked to a retired couponer at the library and it flipped my whole approach

She was sorting a binder of clipped inserts from 2009 and told me she still checks the Sunday paper because digital deals never stack the way they used to, which got me thinking about how I just chase app alerts without checking the fine print. That conversation last Tuesday made me realize I've been missing the double coupon days at my local grocery in Portland, so has anyone else gone back to paper after going all digital?

Wait, is paper really worth the hassle of clipping and hauling around a binder, or are we just romanticizing the old days? I tried going back to Sunday inserts last year and my savings actually went down, not up. The digital apps I use have better coupons now, and they update in real time instead of making me dig through three weeks of expired stuff. Plus, that 2009 binder thing, stores change their policies so often that old tricks like double coupons barely exist outside of a few rural spots. Your mileage may vary in Portland, but I'd bet the time you spend on paper could be better spent stacking store rewards with cash back apps.
