My cheap air fryer died after 4 months, no warning.

Was making wings last Tuesday and it just stopped mid-cycle, smoke smell and everything. Anyone else have luck with a specific brand replacement under $80?

Smoke smell" is the part that gets me. I'd try a Gourmia next time, they're cheap and last a bit longer than that.

My buddy Mike tried one of those cheaper air fryers and his whole apartment smelled like burnt plastic for a week. He finally just gave it to Goodwill and bought something with better reviews.

Honestly, did he maybe skip the initial burn-in? Most air fryers, even the cheap ones, need a hot run with nothing in them the first time to burn off factory oils. I grabbed a no-name one for like thirty bucks a couple years ago and it smelled a little weird for the first ten minutes, but after that it was totally fine and still works. Ngl, sometimes people just get unlucky with a dud unit from a bad batch, but I think the whole "burnt plastic for a week" thing might have been a problem that a proper first use could have fixed. Not saying your buddy made a dumb choice, but that Goodwill move might have been a little quick, you know?
