I stopped trusting the little "was $79.99" tags at Kohl's after I scanned one at the price checker in Sioux Falls
I was standing in the Kohl's on 41st in Sioux Falls last Saturday and grabbed a hoodie with a tag that said "was $79.99, now $39.99." Out of pure curiosity I walked it over to the price scanner in the shoe section and it came up as $34.99 regular price, no sale needed. I checked three more items after that and two of them rang up cheaper than the tag said. Now I just scan everything before I get in line, takes 30 extra seconds and I've saved about $60 over the last couple trips. Does anyone know if this is a store by store thing or if other chains are doing the same thing with those fake compare-at prices?
Used to figure those tags were at least in the ballpark, but after reading stuff like this I'm scanning everything now too. The whole "compare at" thing is basically made up, since stores can slap any fake original price they want next to the real one. Takes a few extra seconds at the scanner and it's saved me money, so I'm not going back to trusting the tag.
