Yard sale lady gave me her whole recipe book for free

I was picking through a yard sale in Nashua last Saturday and this older woman noticed I kept flipping through her old recipe binder. She said 'you actually cook from scratch, don't you?' and then just handed the whole thing to me, no charge. It had 40 years of handwritten notes and clippings from local church suppers. Has anyone else gotten something way better than the sticker price when you showed real interest in what someone was selling?

And that's the thing, people are so quick to just toss stuff or haggle over a dollar, but when you actually slow down and show genuine interest in the story behind something, it changes the whole transaction. My neighbor does the same thing with her old garden tools, she'll practically give away a shovel to someone who asks about the tomato variety she used to grow, but she'll charge full price to someone who just grabs it without a word. It's like the item becomes a handshake instead of a sale, a little piece of handing down knowledge. You got way more than a recipe book there, you got a piece of that lady's Sunday afternoons and potluck history, and that's the kind of stuff you can't really put a price tag on.
