Thought the Facebook post about the old Almeda Mall food court was a joke, drove 40 minutes and there it was
Some guy in a local group kept posting that the food court at Almeda Mall still had a working Orange Julius with the original 1987 menu board, and everyone in the comments called him a liar. I finally drove out there last Saturday just to prove him wrong, and sure enough the gate was half pulled down but the lights were on and a woman was actually blending drinks behind the counter. The mall itself is a ghost town, 90 percent of the stores are boarded, but that one stall is still open and she said she pays her rent in cash every month. Has anyone else run into a single store hanging on inside a dead mall like that, or is this as weird as I think it is?
Dead malls always have one or two places that just refuse to die, and it's usually because the owner has some kind of deal or situation nobody else knows about. I've seen a barber still cutting hair in a mall that had zero other cars in the lot, and a guy selling pretzels in a food court where every other stall was dark. There's something about these spots where the rent basically becomes a handshake and the person running it has been there so long they can't picture leaving. Makes you wonder how many of these little holdouts are out there that never make it to the internet.
