Snuck into the old Northgate Mall in Chattanooga at 7am and the food court clock was still running
A buddy of mine does security work around Chattanooga and he let me walk the old Northgate Mall with him last Saturday before his shift officially started. The place has been mostly empty since the bigger stores pulled out about 4 years ago, but here is the thing that got me. The giant clock above the food court, the one shaped like a sun with rays, was still ticking away like nothing happened. Not one store open, half the lights dead, dust on the tile, and that clock just kept perfect time. I stood there for a good 10 minutes watching it. Somebody is still paying that electric bill, or it is wired into something nobody wants to touch. The carousel near the Sears end was still roped off but the horses looked clean, like staff still wipe them down. It is such a small thing but it made the whole trip for me. Has anyone else seen a dead mall where one random piece of it is still fully alive?
That image of staff still wiping down carousel horses nobody rides anymore is haunting in the best way. It makes you wonder if the whole mall is just being kept on life support by one maintenance guy who refuses to let it go.
