Serious question, did the food court at Northgate Crossing close all at once or one counter at a time?
I walked through Northgate Crossing in Springfield on Saturday and counted 11 empty food court stalls with the chairs still stacked on the tables. The weird part was the giant pretzel place, still open, one guy working it, and he told me the last three tenants left within about 4 months of each other. Made me wonder if the food court dying is the real sign a mall is done, way more than the anchor stores. Has anyone else tracked a mall where the food court went first?
11 empty stalls and the chairs already stacked up is wild... like they just gave up on the whole room at once. But the one guy still working the pretzel counter is the part that gets me. Four months between the last three leaving means it was a slow bleed, not one big shutdown day. That's almost worse, because it means people kept walking past a food court that was half dead and just stopped bothering to stop. Your point about the food court being the real sign is a good one. Anchors can sit there for years looking full while the middle of the mall is a ghost town.
