Found out my local mall has 47 empty stores and the owner lives in another country
I was poking around the county property records site last week and pulled up the tax info for Northgate Mall in my town. The whole 680,000 square foot place is owned by a shell company with an address in the Cayman Islands, which I did not see coming at all. I went back through old news articles and found out the owner has not set foot in the state since 2016. There are 47 empty storefronts in there right now and the only things left are a nail salon, a pretzel stand, and a Sears that somehow still opens every day. It feels like nobody can even get the owner on the phone to fix the roof, which has been leaking into the food court for two winters now. Has anyone else dug into property records for their dead mall? I want to know if this whole out of country landlord thing is as common as I think it is.
