Work laptop security vs personal freedom, which way do you lean?
Last Tuesday I overheard two guys at a coffee shop in Portland arguing about company monitoring. One said his employer tracks every keystroke and he's fine with it because he gets to use the device for banking too. The other said he refuses to load anything personal on a work machine, even his password manager, after a coworker got pulled into HR over a search history flag. I see both sides honestly. On one hand, the company owns the hardware and needs to protect client data, but on the other hand, where's the line when they start reading your messages? Has anyone else dealt with a policy that felt way too invasive, or do you think total separation is the only safe play?
Man, that coffee shop argument sounds like every Tuesday at my office honestly. I feel for you because there's no clean answer here, and it stinks that a coworker got flagged just for a search. Total separation is safest, but it's not always possible when you're on call or traveling.
