Mounting a shelf above my desk made me check my computer's login settings
I was putting up a shelf in my home office and had to move my computer. When I plugged it back in, I saw it didn't ask for a password to start. I looked into it and found the auto-login was on. I turned that off right away so now it requires a password every time. I also set a screensaver to lock after a few minutes. It's a basic fix but it stops anyone from just walking up and using it. My personal files are safer because of a simple hardware move.

Did the same thing after my cat unplugged my laptop.

Good catch on fixing that auto-login! @mary_lee27 is right that it's easy to miss until something moves. Setting a screensaver lock is a smart extra step for sure.

Auto-login is actually way more convenient for a personal device at home. The security risk is pretty low if you live alone or trust your roommates. It saves a ton of time for no real downside in that situation.
